This is a much older grotto that is far too small for the lions, but the new Elephant Odyssey exhibit is not really that much larger or much of an improvement aesthetically. On a side note, does anyone know when the mesh cover was added to the exhibit?

I was wondering the same thing. Did they fill in the moat to create more useable space? Or is this a post-San Francisco zoo tiger incident safety reaction?
Longer than that, this became the lion exhibit when the original lion grotto was demolished to build the dour langur exhibit in Sun Bear Forest in 2000, and the mesh has been there the whole time.
