Elephant Odyssey - Giant Sloth Statue

July 26th, 2011.
What do people think of these Pleistocene megafauna statues in Elephant Odyssey? Someone mentioned in an earlier post that they found them too cartoonish.

Personally I rather like them because I think that they really do convey to people that there were very large animals living in California and most of the rest of the world not that long ago in a very vivid way. A similar, more authentic and perhaps superior, experience can be had at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tarpits, but I still like these statues as an educational tool.

Whatever people think of the design of the statues, they are overwhelmingly popular with families. I'm not sure how they work as kiddie magnets for photos, but the extinct lion, elephant and sloth statues in Elephant Odyssey literally had line-ups of people waiting for a pose. However, I'm sure that most folks just see a fake elephant and urge their child to stand in front of it without truly grasping the implication of what Elephant Odyssey is attempting to tell visitors.
