Elephant Odyssey - Madagascar Garden

July 26th, 2011.
This is one aspect of Elephant Odyssey that I can really understand why people criticize the exhibit.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the exhibit's theme in any conceivable way. Why is this here? The obvious answer seems to be that it was there before they built the exhibit and they didn't want to move or destroy it. It still doesn't belong there.

And if moving part of the botanic garden's plant collection resulted in the death of these rare plants, then what to do?

Curse you Zooplantman, must you always use infallible logic and make sensible points?

It never occurred to me that these plants were rare. In this light not moving the plants makes great sense (even if their placement no longer does).

It would be great if they at least put a sign there explaining why the plants were there and why the plants are important. Perhaps they already have and I do not remember it or overlooked it.

Rant withdrawn. Case dismissed.

I remember that there is a sign about Madagascar endemic flora (if not fauna) and i think they tried to tie that into the messages of EO.

But the Horticulture Curator told me about this particular collection and the potential harm of transplanting them. The design team would, I believe, have loved to have them moved but bowed to Curatorial reason.

Now, imagine if instead the powers that be decided to build the world's greatest outdoor Madagascar exhibit here....

And had to figure out a sign explaining why elephants were in Madagascar rather than why Pachypodiums were in a California elephant exhibit (wait, did I get that right?)
