Is it true that the series of koala enclosures in this general area have all been demolished in anticipation of 2013's new "Outback" zone?

Yes, all of the old koala exhibits are gone. There is a temporary koala yard set up over by the 4D theater.

How many koalas do San Diego Zoo keep? I imagine it would be an expensive venture trying to feed koalas anywhere outside of Australia. At least San Diego's climate is more suitable than Vienna or Edinburgh for growing eucalyptus.
Does anyone know if these zoos have a plantation especially for feeding their koalas? Melbourne Zoo grows all of it's leaves out at Werribee and has them brought in.

Hi Pat, we have eucalyptus woodland growing all over California. It really likes the climate here which is a Mediterranean climate like parts of Australia. There are koalas in San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and all of these zoos grow their own eucalyptus on their grounds, in the surrounding parks, and other areas. The zoos in the eastern U.S. get their eucalyptus flown in from California, as I think do the European zoos renting koalas from San Diego (can someone confirm this?).

I'm not sure how many koalas San Diego has now, but it is said to be the largest group outside of Australia and must number in the dozens.

There are also private nurseries in Florida that ship eucalyptus and other types of browse to several zoos in this country.

Thanks for that. It's interesting that in other parts of the world koalas are a big enough draw to make flying leaves between continents worth it.

Koalas are definitely in the major leagues of animal charisma along with giant pandas.

Lisbon also has a mediterranean climate, and Eucalyptus is one of the evasive species in more quantity. The koalas feed on eucalyptus produced here.
