Columbian Mammoth statue Elephant Odyssey

Has Walt disney and the mouse taken over San Diego Zoo? i read in our papers than the old Disneyland was in a dangerous area these days with gangs fighting, dealing etc I hadn't realised they had up and off to the zoo::D!

I would hardly call the resort district of Anaheim "dangerous".

Only dangerous to one's wallet:)

Dean, the San Diego Zoo has been noticeably Disneyfied with costumed animal characters walking around and numerous "attractions" like ziplines, 4D theaters, Segway scooter tours, climbing walls, etc. It is fortunately possible to tune this stuff out and still enjoy it as a zoo, for now at least.

I wouldn't call these statues Disneyish necessarily, as they are an attempt to show what Pleistocene animals were like and how big they were relative to the living animals which they are adjacent to.

In the UK we have dubbed this sort of thing "dumbing down".

I accept that making a zoo attractive to families is important, but if it's at the cost of the place being taken seriously as an education al resource then it's a bad thing.

thanks for clearing up the dangerous comment I was last there in 1981 and didn't find it at all dangerous though I did feel unsafe from time to time around my hotel on Hollywood blvd. i suppose it depends on the view of who wrote the article.

I was thinking about the models last night and I wonderd if there was a human figure too? it may be more educational if they had a neanderthal family next to the mammoths to show how the human race has changed over the millenia too.
what may look huge to a modern family of nearly six feet would look immense to a family of five footers.
just a thought
