Taken 26th October 2015
Sort of walkthrough (people can enter the aviary but only stay on one covered viewing deck at the side).
With Eurasian Black Vultures, Bateleurs, Red Kites, and Egyptian Vultures.

This is very impressive. I might have to visit the Czech Republic a little sooner than I thought!
It looks like Prague makes good use of their hilltop setting, integrating slopes into enclosure design. Kind of a rich man's Dudley! :p

I loved this aviary, watching the various birds fly and glide around the aviary. I then actually felt sad that these beautifull and agile birds were kept in a space that allowed only a couple of seconds if that of uninterrupted flight.

This aviary is rather dated. Built in 1979 as an replacement of a Janda´s giant aviary, that itself was built in 1931 at the same place, then collapsed due to heavy snow in winter 1969. It was difficult to get material and engineer to build this aviary, in conditions of central planned communistic economy. At last, they got somebody who was experienced in railway metal bridge projecting. Thus the main frame is constructed from prefabricated bridge segments and appears rather heavy-handed. This is in contrast to the old elegant, gracile and stylish Janda´s aviary. That old Janda´s aviary was successful as a place where first ever captive Andean condor was reared in 1937.
