It's real but there is some fairly accurate mock lava rock holding up the bank. Idk why it's included as the pathway seems quite Hawaiian themed and it could be successful for a Hawaiian exhibit. Since EO all their mock rock has looked really similar.
Has San Diego ever displayed any of the Hawaiian bird species? They run the Hawaiian bird captive breeding program in Hawaii, but I don't recall ever seeing any of these species exhibited at the zoo.
I wonder if there was ever any thought of displaying them in this area?
