I think that the hanging stuff is from a plant. The aviary is heavily planted.
New Caledonia is still on my list of places to go, but the urgency has been alleviated now that I have at least seen a kagu. Tuatara mania is still in full effect.
no, I mean the thing where its beak should be! There's a long rigid structure sticking out in front of its face, but kagu have red bills which are shorter than that. I can't work it out.

Oh ok. Maybe its a piece of plant (stem, twig) hanging in the dangling plant material and obscuring the bill behind it? If David Brown has more photos from slightly different angles that would help.
