Old WPA exhibits. There are five of these they hold Southern Ratel, South African Bat-eared Fox, Fossa, Buergers' Tree Kangaroo, and African Yellow-spotted Rock Hyrax. In June 2013 there was a Turkmenistan Caracal instead of the tree kangaroo.
On each of my visits to this world-famous zoological paradise I've shaken my head at the fact that these 1930's relics were still in existence. Is it the plan to finally bulldoze them into oblivion once the bizarrely named "Africa Rocks" opens? San Diego Zoo will celebrate its centenary in 2016 and I can only cross my fingers that the 5 small cages from the WPA (Works Progress Administration) era are smashed into dust.
