Polar Bear enclosure - 1981

This is not one of my photos, it was taken by my mother on a family visit to the zoo.
January 1981

I remember this eyesore well. San Diego had a whole road of outdated grottoes. Even the great San Diego Zoo still has its relics.

I too remember this grotto, does anyone happen to know if this one was where Sun Bear Forest is now?

Also when I remember seeing this enclosure I don't remember it being as white.

Ituri, yes this is where Sun Bear Forest is now, approximately where the forest clearing is. I believe in the mid-1980's the grotto was painted in multiple colors of cream or beige or light brown to reduce glare, but I rmember thinking it was still an eyesore!

When were the bears moved out of this?
