macaw free flight

January 29-30, 2014.
Oh I just love this shot. This is just great timing. Couldnt have been in a better spot at a better time. Does this kind of thing happen often at the zoo? Macaws just flying by?

My cousin and I were walking at Australia Outback around 9:30 in the morning. The trainer had the crate and saw our cameras and told us she was going to release the macaws and they would fly down the canyon and if we stood over here it would be a good shot. Afterwards I asked her about the schedule and here is what I learned.

This is their "long flight" which can happen at any time of day and any location - sometimes morning like this and sometimes afternoon. There is no way to find out ahead of time you just have to be lucky. However, they also do a "short flight" to open the zoo right up front every day at 9am.

Were they released from the crate suspended from the crane in the background? It seems like quite an intense set up they've got going.

That is correct. The crate rests on the bed of the truck underneath and when they get to the spot they want to set up, there are braces put out to hold the truck in place. The crate is then winched up on a sturdy pole attached to the truck.

Thats cool thanks for that information. I really would like to visit San Diego at some point and its good to know I should be there for opening (not that I wouldnt aim for that anyway because I like to have as much time as possible to enjoy any place I visit).

I never even noticed the truck in the background. Focused right in on the bright colourful birds. That is an amazing set up. Someone was really thinking when they designed that.
