bearded pig

Man, I wish San Diego Zoo still had Bornean bearded pigs, they are such an interesting suidae species, too bad they are a phase out species in AZA zoos, anybody know why ?

The same reason for every other phase out, not enough space/demand/interest for a sustainable population.

They're being taken over by non-AZA facilities. The species won't disappear.

Thats what it seems like is happening because Southwicks Zoo has them, Arbuckle Wilderness has them and even Ken's Exotics sells them to private collections and there exotic animal hobbysits, and also didnt you say that they are harder to take care of then Red river hogs ?

WHAT they got rid of them :eek::(:( what replace them

Yes I'm afraid, unfortunately AZA is phasing Bornean bearded pigs out, I am not really sure I agree with this decision, they are a vulnerable species and their population is declining, the two main Suidae species that AZA zoos are keeping and breeding are Red river hogs and Visayan warty pigs

If you want to know more about this, I suggest that you read through this thread
