Do they still have the dwarf mongoose in here? They didn't seem to be in there for the past several years. I remember when they also had South African ground squirrels in here.
Do you remember what the original species line-up was when this exhibit opened in 1986, geomorph? Was it pretty much what is still there today?
I remember the species in here in 1986 were exactly the same mix as today, I too remember some years past when there was no dwarf mongoose but I never saw it when there were ground squirrels. In the early years there was some scattered grass in here as well, and more scattered hieroglyphs on some of the rocks.

First of all, thank you for the amazing photo record of what is still--IMO--the finest exhibit ever built at the SD Zoo. The attention to detail and overall concept have never been matched since (unfortunately). Also glad to hear the original species lineup is back--on my last few visits, mongooses were not part of the mix.
I do miss the original open-topped lizard exhibit, and some of the additional aviaries are rather clunky, but this is still a great exhiibt. One can only hope the new Africa Rocks complex that will adjoin this area carries the same level of quality as the original.
