I think it was San Diego Zoo's attempt to better showcase their botanical collection, which is as impressive as their animal collection, but little noticed by most visitors.
This plant exhibit was empty as of November 2014 as the area around it is now fenced off and about to be remodeled as the new Africa Rocks exhibit complex. Hopefully plants and their interpretation will get some attention in the new complex.
Thanks David, I wasn't sure if it was to show off rare plants that couldn't be left in the open areas of the zoo for fear of theft. It has given me an idea for my own little zoo shed when,- if ever- i get it finished.
