September 2014. This 18-exhibit complex opened in 2009. It replaced the majority of the former area known as Horn and Hoof Mesa. Its theme is an exploration of the extinct animals of Southern California, interpreted through living examples of their descendants or similar animals. The complex is a long path that can be entered at either end.

Yes, for those that do not know this is Ranchipur, a 48 year old Asian elephant who was moved from the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park to the San Diego Zoo in 2009.

Is Ranchipur ever mixed with the females? Or is he always kept by himself? And does anyone know if he has ever sired any young? I don't recall any Asian elephants ever being born at the Safari park, but maybe Ranchipur has a history before San Diego.

Indeed, Ranchipur became a, unfortunately not succesful, fivetimes father at the WAP.:

1.August,2, 1987:dead born male calf to mother"Connie"
2.July 12,1989 female stillbirth, 10 month od to mother"Mary"
3.Nov.20,1989female, dead born after a ceasarian operation to mother"Jean".She died 10 days later.
4.June 13,1990. 1.0"Omar"to mother"Connie".She did not accepted her calf and the attempt to handraise the bullcalf has failed, it was killed after 9 month.
5.Sept.27 19991 1.0 deadborn to mother"Mary"

Ranchipur fathered only one surving calf, a female named"Rozana", born at Nov.8,1992 at Albuquerque Zoo to mother"Alice".She has lived at WAP from 1987 until 1992.
