I've always considered the 5-acre Children's Zoo to be one of the weak links in the "world-famous" San Diego Zoo and so I'm delighted to learn that $30 million will be spent in upgrading the almost 60 year-old facilities. The entire Children's Zoo is a bit of a mish-mash of aesthetically unpleasant cages and small enclosures and while no official plans have been released it is still great news that this part of the zoo will be improved. Maybe a kid-themed "Elephant Odyssey"?

It'd be great if they themed the Children's Zoo as South American, given there is no "South American" area in the zoo, and many South American species are scattered randomly or largely absent (e.g. tamarins/marmosets). This aera is also adjacent to the Hummingbird aviary and Galapagos Tortoise exhibits, which are a bit South American. I think you could do a great Children's Zoo with South American species.
