Taken 4/5/16. This exhibition is NOT in the San Diego Zoo; it is in the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park, near the zoo. The exhibition celebrates the centennial year of the zoo and will be on view until January 1, 2017. The extensive display occupies 3 galleries, as well as some introductory features in the entrance Glass Gallery and Atrium, an interactive gallery for children called Roar! Family Den, and daily screenings of historic Zoorama television broadcasts in the Thornton Theater.

Look at the mane on that lion! If this is the original lion from the first exhibition, it was likely wild caught. Could this be a pure-blooded Barbary lion?

The zoo had a male lion named Prince by at least 1923 who had a very impressive mane, but I have not seen it confirmed that he was one of the originals or the one shown in this early photo in the display.

Would you recommend the trek to see the exhibit if one happens to be visiting the zoo also?

Absolutely, it is essential viewing! I took a break for a few hours from the zoo and went over to the exhibition, and it was uncrowded and enjoyable.
