Siberian musk deer (Moschus moschiferus)

Dec. 2015. In an unsigned yard along the pathway from Owens Aviary to Center Street. Not very sure about the identification though. (Aren\'t SD\'s musk deers off-exhibit?)

UGH I missed it. That looks like one to me. They have tufted deer in at least two enclosures, but this doesn't look like one of them. I actually missed Sun Bear Forest and Owens Aviary altogether because of my Inside Look Tour which was two hours long. More reasons to come back :)

I checked this out yesterday. I thought that there was just one big exhibit under the moving sidewalk, actually there are three. There is one that can be seen from Park Way and on the right side of first section of the moving sidewalk. This one has Western tufted deer in it. There are 2 exhibits on the left side of the moving sidewalk. One holds breeding Siberian musk deer. Sorry, I don't know how many. The other one you can see when you walk the stairs. It holds 1 male Siberian musk deer.

Thanks! I totally missed the one with breeding musk deer~ (And I thought I didn't miss any enclosure!)

I would not have known if there wasn't a keeper in the exhibit at the time. I am thankful for the keepers that always take the time to answer all my questions.

If it was at the Safari Park, it was behind the scenes. It wasn't in any of the Asian field exhibits, I took a caravan safari. Another possibility would be LA, yet on my visit on the 20th, I looked at all the hoofstock exhibits in the back of the park and saw none. I didn't see Japanese serow either, so I'm thinking I may have missed some.

I believe the serows used to occupy the hoofstock exhibit between Visayan warty pig and tufted deer, and I didn't see any animals either during my visit.

The population is now 10.5 in four institutions, with the San Diego Zoo and the Columbus Zoo being two of them. The population manager is at the Denver Zoo, so it's quite possible that some are located there. The species is now a phase-in species, which is great, but an import is required due to limited genetics.
