Lembe and baby Bolwazi. Great photo of the exhibit with the rhinos in it! I really like this Black rhino exhibit because it replicates the woodland savannas where they come from quite well with the groups of trees sparsely placed within the habitat. I think the enclosure is about acre too, which is large for Black Rhinos.
They have three:
Jambia- the 9 year old father
Lembe- the 12 year old mother
Bolwazi- The baby born in the summertime
They had another baby born back in 05 who currently resides at the St. Louis Zoo and he will begin breeding with their very young female there once he is old enough. SDWAP's Black Rhinos are very prolific.
Its very hard to keep large quantities of Black rhinos at one facility because they are mainly solitary. Miami and Cleveland both have a lot, 5 and 4 respectively. The nice thing about Cleveland's is 3 of the 4 are female, so the three females are kept together during the day. SDWAP has countless amounts of White Rhino and probably even more Indian Rhino (They have had 3 births since September).
You would think because they definitely have the room to build another black rhino exhibit adjacent to the current one. Good thing the park has room to grow as some zoos like Cleveland have no room to expand and thus a whole section of the zoo must be reconfigured to build the elephant exhibit.
