San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park

3 acre African elephant habitat that is one of the best elephant exhibits in the country.
When will the two elephant exhibits be combined into one? I'm assuming that will happen later on in 2009, after Elephant Odyssey is up and running.

I am not sure when. The elephant keeper told me they will still have a fence to separate them. This will be great for managing the soon to be 12 elephants, and they will also replant the yards when they combine them.

The San Diego WAP has had terrific success with its African elephants, and once the Asians are shifted to the zoo then the WAP will have one of the largest pachyderm habitats in North America. It is great to see that more and more zoos are constructing elephant enclosures that are now pushing 4 acres and more in size. The varied terrain at the WAP also allows the elephants to get quite a bit of exercise.

I would say the one downside to the huge enclosures is they are very hard to take care of. It took 6 keepers over an hour to clean up the paddock and place food.

Yeah in what I've heard about the construction, there will be a new visitor path between the elephant exhibits and there will be some sort of transfer across the visitor path that they can use to shift the elephants. Exactly what they are doing with that I'm unsure.
