The Fringe eared is actually a subspecies of the beisa. You can tell a Beisa Oryx by its dark brown coat and a fringe eared subspecies by the tufts of hair on the ears of the oyrx.
Definitely not Arabian Oryxes. They are basically white with black or brown facial and leg markings. They were kept here in Los Angeles from 1967 until the early 21st century, and reproduced literally in the hundreds. I hope to see them back in our collection again one day.
...and the beisa and fringe-eared can be distinguished from gemsbok (also at the SDWAP) because the gemsbok have black on their flanks and a real horse-like tail.
Do we need to include scimitars in our little oryx monograph here?
