The bonobos were on an island. They used to be visible from the old monorail system. The new tram does not go near the island. So not such a waste of space as it sounds.
@betsy: I knew that. From the view of the common visitors it isn't a big thing - agree so far. But looking at the point, that a disease could eliminate the complete group in San Diego Zoo now, it was better having split them on 2 zoological institutions in the past.
Also this exhibit could have been used for surplus animals from different kind of species with no or just a little improvement.
And last but not least: When the visitor can't see the exhibit, they can't see the plants of the new garden either...
