Gorilla Exhibit

This one-acre gorilla enclosure is nothing spectacular, but it is much better than many similar great ape exhibits scattered across the world. It lacks climbing structures and is ugly in places (huge brick walls everywhere) but the size of the enclosure is definitely adequate.

While it may "lack climbing structures," it does contain a number of large live, unprotected trees. Granted, these are cypress that look nothing like African rain forest trees, but because of that (the unappealing taste of their foliage and bark), they have survived for over 30 years with a fair number of gorillas. And actually, the groundplane and rock formations (ugly as they are) in the exhibit provide a much more varied surface than the many "soccer field" gorilla enclosures out there. Certainly not the worst--but it opened at about the same time that Woodland Park's did....and we know which one has stood the test of time.

I seem to remmber that a gorilla in this enclosure actually builds a nest in these trees!

It is however another enclosure where we look down on them!!

This exhibit seemed to provide most of their needs. It just didn't wow me. Good adequate size though.
