I think the title should read Uncia uncia

Though if you want to call it U. uncia, we wouldn't blame you

I quite like the idea of splitting tigers away from Panthera and putting them in Uncia

it's always been Panthera to me, and Panthera it shall remain.

(Although I do quite like the idea of Uncia tigris too!)

That would be the only way Uncia would be a valid genus. But, there is a growing trend in mammalian taxonomy to establish genera as a lineage that dates back to at least the Miocene/Pliocene boundary, and by that criterion Uncia wouldn't qualify as a valid genus.

D'oh! Yes, yes it should.


The panthera uncia is new to me, though. This is the first time I have heard of a reclassification?
