The second and final polar bear grotto @ the San Francisco Zoo. No idea on the substrate here, but I don\'t think it\'s very deep.

Is the railing on top a public viewing area, or is that just for keepers?

Like Mr. Brown said, that's just for keepers. That said, I'm not even sure that they use it these days. The few times I've seen keepers in the area, they were using a door in the side(?) of the enclosure.

Maintenance might use it for tree trimming, though. There's a lot of that going on right now; a branch near the Savanna snapped and destroyed a section of railing.

Well I commend them for adding dirt and grass to their grotto. Both of the polar bears are old. Do they plan to do a remodel or do you think they'll demolish/add another species when they pass away?

It should be noted that the polar bears occupy two grottoes; one has the dirt and grass, the other is the concrete monstrosity with a pool the size of my bathtub.

To answer your question: I have no idea. Director Peterson makes oblique references to rehabbing the "Americas" section, but the only definite news continues to be that damnable playground. If I were a betting man, I would expect both bears to pass before any definite work is done on the grottoes. The outward operating principle continues to be "enhancing the visitor experience."
