Seattle Aquarium is located on Elliott Bay in Puget Sound on the edge of Downtown Seattle in a historic pier building and an adjoining pier building built for its 1977 opening. The historic pier building was largely remodeled in 2007, while the 1977 building remains a timepiece of 1970's classic reinforced concrete exhibit design.

This was a great addition to the aquarium, and an impressive entrance to the indoor exhibits. I just wish that the outdoor section was half as nice.

Do you mean the outdoor exterior of the main building, or the outdoor exhibits of the 1977 building?

The outdoor exhibits (fur seal, otter, harbour seal) are all subpar in comparison to many other aquariums.

Oh yes, for sure! I do enjoy what I described as the timepiece of the classic 1970s exhibit design here, but the enclosures themselves are subpar, especially the poor harbor seal one that I didnt photograph that is on the edge of the pier boardwalk. But I do think the Salmon Ladder and Under Water Dome are the triumphs of the complex. In the remodeled historic pier building, the Life of a Drifter exhibit (the ring aquarium filled with jellies that constantly circulates and has changing colored lights) has the abstract quality I tend to appreciate, in fact it made my top 25 aquarium exhibits in my new thread, Favorite Individual Exhibits!

And I think the first several of the outdoor exhibits from the 70s (but recently given a facelift) are borderline brilliant: the sandy shore (birds and fish), tidepool and puffin exhibits are quite nice, and as you've noted the underwater dome and salmon ladder are "classics that stand the test of time." The mammal exhibits are all much too small and sterile.

The new entry is terrific, and I love the long sea star tank bordering the hallway that connects to the Pier building

reduakari, yes that long exhibit they call Crashing Waves, I posted a pic of that as well, it's a great exhibit to have along a fairly narrow connection between the main hall and the rest.

Thanks for all the great pix, as always.....
