I agree, an incident is only waiting to happen... They themed this enclosure as a "fisher hut", so they added fisher nets, goat ledders, hand-made bakets etc.
There are some good and some bad sides of this new exhibit (opened May08).
Bad: no hot-wire along the enclosure borders (many zoos learnt this lesson on the hard way), no prepaired nesting area, many potencially dangerous objects (nets, baskets etc.) on the enclosure.
Good: nice open area (almost 2.000 square meters) with a large lake and an island in the middle, nice light house (80 square meters) and good breeding results so far: 4 chicks hatched in 2008, and at least 6 chicks hatched this year.
The total projecting and building costs were 150.000 euros (= 250.000 Australian dollars). They moved 36 Greater flamingos in, produced 10 chicks and had only 1 death since the opening, so I think it´s a rather successful story, despite the imperfections.
