Earlier this year I read an article stating that SeaWorld San Diego was possibly going to close down one of the smaller aquariums and turn it into a restaurant and gift shop. Is the aquarium in this photo the one that is going to be closed? Is there a time frame for that or will it occur after the new entrance is complete? It is difficult keeping track of the construction going on at this park as every year something new is added.
Are you sure? I just received a map from someone who visited last month and the Freshwater Aquarium is still clearly labeled. The World of the Sea Aquarium has now been changed to "Aquaria: World of Fishes" and it appears that the aquarium that has closed is "Aquarium de la Mer". In my opinion that one was the weakest of the trio and I'm sure that it will not be greatly missed if in fact it has been permanently closed.

The proposed project is to demolish an existing approximately 5,000 square foot freshwater aquarium building and its related site work and to remodel and convert an existing 4,700 square foot gift shop into a structure with 2,300 feet of retail facilities and 1,952 square feet of culinary services at 500 SeaWorld Drive.
Also it seems they have renamed "The World of the Sea" to "Aquaria: World of Fishes" (gag!) to deal with the inclusion of freshwater species from the Freshwater Aquarium.
At Aquaria, we are showcasing saltwater and freshwater ecosystems from around the world. This aquarium has one of the largest schools of Piranhas on exhibit as well as prehistoric alligator gar, the massive fruit-eating pacus, leopard sharks and thousand of colorful and exotic reef fish. It's an amazing aquarium experience!
I found the answer to my question. The reason the Freshwater Aquarium is still listed on the park's map is because it is still very much in existence. It seems as if the talk of demolishing the facility a couple of years ago did not amount to anything. This is an excerpt from a SeaWorld email to me: "The freshwater aquarium does still exist and there are no talks over demolishing the building currently."
