Tiger Trek - Tiger Exhibit

July 16th, 2010.
The pair of tiger habitats at Sedgwick County Zoo are part of the "Slawson Tiger Trek" exhibit complex, and both of the big cat enclosures feature massive glass windows to allow for optimal viewing by the public. Rocks and pools are strategically placed near the large windows, and I believe that the entire area (tigers, deer, red pandas) opened in 2009.

And that tall fence will "disappear" as the bamboo grows. They planted small stuff so it's taking a few years, but it will do the job. (And no, I am not associated with this one)

I also found it to be a beautiful exhibit, with one noticable flaw. The large concrete pad near the windows really takes away from the exhibit. I realize isn't anything major, just an odd thing to put in this otherwise beautiful exhibit.

The concrete pad is actually a heated "porch" so the tigers hang out there right by the glass. It is also a very shady spot for them to escape the sun and sleep. Being large cats they spend a large part of their day sleeping so might as well make a cozy spot for them to lay next to the viewing glass ( and they choose to hang out there a lot!). The keepers also do their enrichment training on one of the pads. It is also common practice to put hardscape right by the glass as a "welcome mat" to help knock off any debris on their feet that might scratch the glass.

Thanks for clearing that up Drew. I suppose it does surve a good purpose, even though it doesn't improve the visual quality of the exhibit.
