Actually it's deceiving where Zero, the polar bear is. Those aren't paw prints in the sand around him. They are seashells embedded in the group. Here's a picture that show a better view of the floor: *tiptoe* Don't want to wake him up... | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I forgot to write descriptions for my photos. I originally did, but they didn't upload properly. This view is from the first window. There's a little more of the pool on the left with a small waterfall. And underwater viewing area right below this picture. The Rocky Coast Gallery Building gives underwater viewing areas to the polar bears and sea lions. A path wraps around the polar bear exhibit, veering down until you get to the entrance of the building. There are pine trees out the outskirts so there's only a few viewing areas where you can see the bears. I tried to get pictures from the main ones. Also, the second window to the right of this is a good spot to look down and see the polar bears go in their inside den area.
I haven't seen some of the new big Polar Bear exhibits like Detroit's or Toronto's but for a smaller zoo this is easily one of my favorite Polar Bear Exhibits, Its a good size and it creates plenty of viewing areas while allowing the bears privacy.

However, it seems as if the entire land area is concrete and that arguably makes this exhibit badly outdated. The newer, better polar bear habitats (Detroit, Toronto, Columbus, Como, even Brookfield) all have grassy or sandy areas for the bears.
Yes it is sad to see no grass at all, but considering the exhibit was built ion 1997 it still looks fairly good and has a good amount of water for them to swim in.
