Small Mammal House - Aardvark - Yea not really

If you can't tell this is a southern Tamandua

As soon as this girl saw these guys she yelled at her mom "Mom look it's the Aardvarks".

That's why I put Aardvark if you were wondering.

When was this photo taken? I am curious if they are back on exhibit now. Thanks!

The tamanduas at this zoo are commonly called, "aardvark" "sloth" and "armadillo". Some people will come to the conclusion they are anteaters, but because the sign has them listed as "Southern Tamandua" and no indication they are a type of anteater, most people dismiss their original thought.

I can somewhat understand Sloths and Aardvarks but an Armadillo? Really?

Also to answer your question this photo was taken 9/22/15.

Also i'm assuming it's for breeding reasons but do you know why the zoo takes them off exhibit a lot?

The sign said they were getting to know each other so I thought it was based on breeding season too. Although they were mating perfectly well while on exhibit. However, a docent friend told me they were off exhibit because they were doing slight cosmetic repairs on their exhibit. I'm glad to see they are back. I feel they are a highlight to the building when you catch them during their active period.

Its interesting that some people mistake a Tamandua with an Aardvark. No common visitor in germany knows an aardvark, we only have three zoos with them,so if people see them, they belive to see, of course, an antaeter, coati or an earth pig...

By the way-does anybody know, in which year the Nocturnal house at the National Zoo was opened and if it is operating ? I belive, it was closed recently , or was this at Philadelphia ?

National zoo has never had a nocturnal house. This was taken inside the small mammal house.

I think they opened their first one in the 1940s (they were experimenting at the time with reversed lighting situations) but I can't find anything further to that.
