Ceratotherium simum cottoni

I'm guessing this is the last one?

They have two, right? But further breeding is impossible after all the four with any breeding potential were sent to Africa.

This photo was taken in 2003, when they had a much larger group.

I believe Baldur is correct as to the current situation - 2 non-breedable females (I guess it wasn't worth the stress and expense of shipping the non-breeding animals back to Africa with the others).

I'm planning on going back to Dvur in 2012 when the European zoo collectors' meeting is in Plzen; will be interesting to see if this subspecies is still there. It's sadly likely that this will become the first animal taxon I've seen in 'person' to go extinct.

Occurred to me the other day that this somewhat dubious honour probably goes to the Cape Verde Kite, Milvus milvus fasciicauda, which was kept at the National Bird of Prey Centre, Newent. Will have to dig out my photos.
