I believe they came from San Diego Zoo, the ones at the Los Angeles Zoo also came from San Diego Zoo

zoos outside of the United States that kept them in the past include the following

Europe:

Poznan Zoo
London Zoo
and
Barcelona Zoo

South America:

Sao Paulo Zoo

Africa:

The zoo in Abidjan, Ivory Coast
and
The zoo in Monrovia, Liberia

Going back to the Royal antelopes in the United States, does anyone know when San Diego Zoo got them and how they were sourced ?

How big is their enclosure? It has been said that many small ungulates actively prefer not to have too much space, as it causes them stress.

They have a fairly decent-sized enclosure as they share it with two hornbill species and a francolin.

It's not just smaller ungulates that are uncomfortable in large space enclosures, even Nyala can get uncomfortable in larger enclosures

I should think it would relate to the habitat within the space. Royal antelope are forest antelope (and nyala bush antelope) so they would not be comfortable in large open spaces. Fill that space with vegetation and they would be fine.

To me the argument (particularly used by reptile keepers) that animals "need" small enclosures to make them happy is just used as a justification.

What are some other US zoos with this species? The only other ones I'm aware of are Brookfield and San Diego. Does Lowrey Park even still have the species?

The ones you mention are the only zoos currently with the species. Lowry Park no longer has them.

@pachyderm pro Not sure when they left but the photo above was taken in mixed African aviary (hornbills, spurfowl etc) opposite the entrance to the safari ride.
