That specimen is a Reeves muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi), most specifically a Chinese reeves muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi reevsi), there are two other subspecies of Reeves muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi), those being the Formosan reeves muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi micrurus) and then there is Muntiacus reevesi jiangkouensis whose common name I do not know, but the validity of that subspecies is questionable

Besides 2 zoos in Germany, I dont know of any Formosan reeves muntjacs (Muntiacus reevesi micrurus) of any other collections outside of Taiwan currently keeping them, as far as I know in the past they kept Formosan reeves muntjacs (Muntiacus reevsi micrurus) at 5 German zoos, 1 Swiss zoo, A few Japanese facilities if memory serves me right, and 3 or so public United States facilities, in the United States they kept them at Ellen Trout Zoo, San Diego Zoo, and San Diego Wild Animal Park, there have also been Formosan reeves muntjacs (Muntiacus reevsi micrurus) in the private sector at places like Shadow Nursery, in fact 1 dealer got 18 Formosan reeves muntjac (Muntiacus reevsi micrurus) in 1 shipment, that was when the ZSSD parks phased them out

As for Muntiacus reevesi jiangkouensis, I dont know of any facility keeping them currently or historically, as for historic and current holdings for Chinese reeves muntjacs (Muntiacus reevsi reevsi) in captivity, there are far too many to list

It is very interesting how rare Formosan muntjacs are in captivity compared to Chinese reeves muntjacs, I wonder why that is ?

Are all Reeves's Muntjacs in the U.S. the nominate ssp?

~Thylo:cool:

In the public sector, I believe so, unless Ellen Trout Zoo still keeps Formosan muntjac (Muntiacus reevsi micrurus)

In the private sector, Shadow Nursery used to keep Formosan muntjacs (Muntiacus reevsi micrurus), but I dont know if they are still around, I am sure other places still have them around, as I said in the comment above, in recent years 1 dealer got 18 head in 1 shipment from San Diego, so in that case, this would lead me to believe that they cant all be deceased

Even if there are still Formosan muntjac (Muntiacus reevsi micrurus) in the private sector, the nominate subspecies which is the Chinese muntjac (Muntiacus reevsi reevsi) is what 99.99% of the ones in captivity in North America are. Weather it be at an AZA zoo, a ZAA zoo, or something an exotic pet breeder is selling, chances are you are looking at the nominate subspecies

I hope this helps

Thanks!

Another question while we're on the topic of muntjacs, is M. m. vaginalis the ssp of all the Indian Muntjacs in the U.S.? I know Shadow Nursery's and St. Louis' Indian Muntjacs are that ssp but what about Bronx's and the others?

No problem Thylacine Alive, and good question

As far as I know, pretty much all of the Indian muntjac in captivity in the public sector in North America are North indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak vaginalis), in relatively recent years, I know that there used to be Burmese muntjacs (Muntiacus muntjak curvostylis) in captivity in North America but I dont know if there are any in the private sector or if they died out

I know you didnt ask this, but i still feel it is worth bringing up, regarding other subspecies of Muntiacus muntjak in captivity, here is what zootierliste has in their database

Burmese muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak curvostylis)
Malabar muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak malabaricus)
Central indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak aureus)
Indochinese muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak annamensis)
Javan muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak muntjak)
Laos muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak menglalis)
And
North indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak vaginalis)

Sadly from the looks of it, now Muntiacus muntjak as a species is gone from European collections

Now here is are 2 Indian muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak) subspecies currently Southeast Asian collections, those subspecies are not listed on zootierliste

Muntiacus muntjak pleihericus
And
Muntiacus muntjak peninsulae

In fact the Melaka Zoo in Malaysia currently keeps both of those subspecies
