Did the aquarium have any explanation for why they have meerkats, or is it one of those things where it's better to not even ask and just move on?
I guess the obvious answer is that people like meerkats and it probably draws them in, regardless of how ridiculous it seems thematically for an aquarium to have meerkats. The Houston Downtown Aquarium has white tigers for presumably this same reason.
Adventure Aquarium has Nile hippos, Denver and Houston have tigers, Maritime has meerkats, and it definitely seems as if some American aquariums are happy to advertise having "the only ones in any aquarium". The meerkats were originally a temporary exhibit in an African section but their stay has been extended. Kids love meerkats, and there is even a meerkat enclosure in a hospital in Melbourne, Australia!
