Toledo Zoo - Africa!

July 2008. Masai Giraffe, Grant's Zebra, Impala, Greater Kudu, Wildebeest, Nile Lechwe, Vultures, Saddle-Billed Stork, White Stork, Helmeted Guineafowl, East African Crowned Crane and Ostrich are the species in this multi-acre exhibit. The savanna is spectacular, but there is only the one viewing opportunity...unless a visitor decides to pay extra for a train ride around the huge paddock.

Often zoos omit zebras from their African Savannahs due to behavioural problems, but there are several of them in this Toldedo Zoo paddock.

There are tons of mixed species African Savanna exhibits with Plains Zebra.

I know a lot of zoos having problems with zebras in mixed exhibits, especially with giraffes, but nevertheless , they do it , because its a favourite combination to the visitors.

So the San Dieo WAP has had masive problems with the grevy zebras in the east africa exhibit, altough it is a huge exhibit. They had to put the zebras out of the exhibit and keep them now in a seperate enclosure.

There is a paper somewhere that suggests that giraffe and zebra parasites may actually "cancel" each other else, reducing parasite levels in both taxa.

Melbourne Zoo only has giraffe, zebra and ostrich in their savannah and the zebras will often stand right next to the giraffes to catch the hay that the giraffes drop.

Plains zebras seem to mix better than the Grevy's do - there are only a handful of mixed species hoofstock exhibits in North America with Grevy's zebras. I know of only the Detroit Zoo (breeding group of zebras with one old blesbok who gets chased from time to time), San Antonio Zoo (with topi and Thomson's gazelle) and at the Caldwell Zoo, in Tyler Texas (three female Grevy's along with greater kudu, impala, brindled gnu, warthog, and various birds). Numbers and sex ratios almost certainly come into play.

At the Toronto Zoo, we have marabou storks and crowned cranes in with our Grevy's; the birds have lots of safe spots, but still a yearling zebra severely maimed one of the cranes last year.

It seems as if zebras in large, mixed-species African Savanna's is not necessarily that unusual, but to see Grevy's zebras in similar exhibits appears to be extremely rare indeed. Thanks ungulate!

I think Lowry Park keeps there grevy's with there giraffes

Poor crane! Zebrina was pretty feist so Im not surprised

I've seen one of the marabou storks get chased by Blue Jay once but thats all the conflict that I noticed

Also, I thougth I'd just let Ungulate know that the male zebra walking by in the pciture is actually Mowgli (Twiga's 2000 baby)

It seems zebras are just naturally jerks. Even in the wild, they seem to bully other herbivores
