Entrance to Kingdom of the Apes.
Kingdom of the Apes has gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans, and this is either part of the orang or chimp exhibit.

Hard to believe, given the amount of apparently un-molested trees and other vegetation that seems to be inside the enclosure.

Just as I suspected I think that the exhibit is one for chimpanzees, as here is a photo of the enclosure from another angle:

When I visited the zoo in 2008 there was a 41 year-old and a 48 year-old chimp that were both moving extremely slowly in their old age. That might explain why the exhibit was still quite lush at that time.

Toledo no longer has chimpanzees this is formerly their outdoor enclosure.

This former outdoor Chimpanzee exhibit is currently still vacant and is going to be renovated soon. The former indoor chimp exhibit is now being used by JJ a solitary male Bornean Orangutan who prefers the company of his keepers as opposed to other orangs.JJ basically has his own one bedroom apartment his behind the scenes his holding area includes a TV,fish tank and books. He also plays games and paints often with his keepers. It is unclear if the zoo intends on acquiring Chimps or perhaps a new species to be housed in the Kingdom of the Apes building.
