North American Living Museum - Empty Polar Bear Exhibit

July 17th, 2010.
Does anyone know what is happening with this empty exhibit? It has been devoid of bears for quite some time, and it is a terrible place to showcase any kind of bruin. The zoo needs to radically overhaul the area, but judging by recent history in Tulsa it might well be years before anything is done with this outdated concrete blob.

No more polar bears at Tulsa

There is a sign out now stating that given the scarcity of polar bears available for exhibit, the zoo will not be replacing its polar bears. Right now the exhibit contains a male grizzly bear. The plan is to remake the exhibit as a permanent home for either Kodiak or grizzly bears. This exhibit is part of the 4-building North American Living Museum complex built in the early 1980's. Specifically it has been part of the "Arctic Tundra" building. One of the buildings (Southern Lowlands) has been renovated already. Two others (Eastern Forests and Southwest Deserts) are currently closed while undergoing renovation. I believe the Arctic building is up next, so one hopes it won't be long before this is improved. I note that while this portion of the exhibit is currently a "concrete blob" the bear does have access to an adjacent dirt/grass yard of roughly the same size.
