Conservation Centre - Primates, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians + Fish

July 17th, 2010.
This building is a real hodge-podge of animals, and most of the exhibits are subpar and badly outdated. Some of the reptile terrariums are impressive, but for the most part the zoo should really make a decision on what types of animals to keep in this building as to the average visitor it seems as if whatever the zoo has extra of can be squeezed in to one of the glass-fronted tanks. Why not expand the reptile/amphibian collection and weed out the mish-mash of primates, fish and birds?

I agree regarding the mishmash: a small variety of reptiles, both New and Old World monkeys, fishes of Asia, a small multi-species display about adaptations, and birds from around the world. I feel like this building is sort of in a holding pattern until newer buildings like the terrific Tropical American Rainforest can be built to take in the species on display here; but who knows when there will actually be funding to do that. In the meantime I'd like to see it become slightly more focused by either removing the primates and having only birds on one end and reptiles on the other, or prefereably by having the whole building contain only animals from a single interesting location, i.e, New Guinea, Madagascar or the Congo Basin, with appropriate theming and educational materials, including Native cultural exhibits. I could see it working actually quite well that way.
