Lavender Finch [Lagonostica caerulescens], used to be one of the African Waxbills that were freely imported -- I paid two pounds for a pair in the early 1970s. Lovely little birds that will need a sustained effort to stop them disappearing from aviculture.

Thanks for posting an answer. I did not see an informational sign for this species at the Zoo and was wondering what it was myself. Beautiful little birds.
