This is one of many large, well-landscaped cheetah exhibits in American zoos. The problem with the enclosure is that the chainlink fencing is unattractive and the cheetahs have many shady spots (pun intended) where they can hide out from visitors. I'd like to see at least one section with a glass walled area that would allow people to get face-to-face with the world's fastest mammal. Oregon Zoo opened a new cheetah habitat in 2009 with massive viewing panels that allows for a close-up experience, and the public feedback is that "Predators of the Serengeti" (African wild dogs, lions, cheetahs, mongooses, caracals, hornbills, pythons, invertebrates, etc) has been a rousing success.
This is an absoulutly wonderful exhibit! Snowleopard, I would appreciate it if you could compile a list of the "many large, well-landscaped cheetah exhibits in American zoos," not in any particular order. Many thanks!
Hmmm...American zoos with top-notch cheetah exhibits. Tulsa, Oregon, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Kansas City, National, Toledo, Jacksonville, Phoenix, Caldwell, Indianapolis (I haven't see it as it opened in 2010) and Montgomery. So off of the top of my head there are 10 excellent exhibits that I have seen in the last few years plus the Indy one that opened last year.
