Woodland Park Zoo - Jaguar Cove

September 2008. Brilliant, multi-leveled exhibit that isn't massive but is packed with all sorts of vegetation.

This does look like a great exhibit! Hope that the Portico Group can create a similar, if not better, exhibit for LA's Jaguar.

I think that this is arguably the second best jaguar enclosure in North America, after Jacksonville Zoo's superb Range of the Jaguar.

A joy to see. Just one of my usual questions: is there a mesh top over the enclosure?

Yes--and the mesh top is a far better solution than the 6 meter tall walls, and no vegetation near it to prevent climbing, that would be required if it was open-topped. Having a totally mesh covered enclosure allows more climbing opportunities to be built into the exhibit, and makes for a much more attractive viewing opportunities for visitors. Jaguars are extremely dangerous and athletic, and no US zoo would dare keep them in an open situation, especially after the San Francisco incident. Milwaukee keeps them in a grotto behind a very deep and wide moat, but there are glass views as well--not ideal.
