1951 Cage - Sloth Bear

May 2009. This cage was state-of-the-art in 1951, but hopefully the zoo will tear it down sooner rather than later. It is one of the few poor enclosures at Woodland Park, even though other zoos around the world still have a variety of cages and bars on their grounds.

How big is it would you say? It seems quite well furnished, although I imagine the bears feel quite claustrophobic with the low roof and that.

It is almost double the size as what is shown in the photo, and is reasonably well furnished with lots of deadwood and rocks over a concrete floor. The aesthetics of the cage turn off a lot of zoo visitors, particularly here where there are so many award-winning exhibits. There is currently a single sloth bear in the cage, and it has held a clouded leopard, puma and a few other animals over the years. The zoo has a small sign in front of it basically apologizing for the appearance of a cage inside such an "immersion-friendly" zoo, and it was constructed in 1951.
