Elephants

June 2009.
For the first time in a hell of a long time the African elephant Watoto was in with one of the Asians (Chai) when I visited the zoo, but there was another Asian (Bamboo) that was separated into the side paddock. It was wonderful to see the African elephant exhibiting normal behaviour, but I would love to see all 3 of the elephants together. It is funny how half of the enclosure is worn-down and dusty like most pachyderm exhibits, but the second half (which can be reached by a gradual incline) is grassy and barely used. The elephants seem to hover within the space of half an acre, which is tiny by today's standards in American zoos.

@DavidBrown The old elephant exhibit is now home to a pair of young, male Greater One-horned Rhinos. One of those rhinos will likely be sent away in the next year or two, leaving a single rhino in the space.
