Actually they are still separated, in two different enclosures. The tapir with the female is their offspring, but off of the top of my head I can't remember if the youngster is a female or male. The "baby" is so big now that from this photo I have no idea which is the mother and which is her now fully grown daughter/son.
@phoenix: I've read all about the malayan tapirs suffering from blindness in Australian zoos, but I have no knowledge of any problems outside of Oz. Certainly in Seattle there is enough rain and shade within the enclosure to keep the tapirs seeing perfectly clearly.
