Olomouc Zoo Pygmy Hippo/ Tamarins

"Mixed Species" Exhibit; the pygmy hippo head can be seen in the muddy pond. The tamarins use the "ball" as an outdoor enclosure.

Yuck.....pretty awful, from nearly any perspective (educational, animal management, and certainly aesthetic).

You forgot the most important one (animal welfare btw to save me another post should you not understand lol).
Those ball cages are odd, I've seen them used before and I'm not sure what to make of them...

Good animal management incorporates good animal welfare--certainly not "forgotten," and certainly pretty difficult to achieve when sticking animals in mesh balls and mudholes.

I was at this zoo some years ago and found it very interesting and generally pretty OK. This little area, though, with the little marmoset ball over a tiny Pygmy Hippo pool (and just nearby an admittedly very healthy-looking Malayan Sun Bear in a weird, and small, glass-walled enclosure) is just bizarre. And not really in a good way.
