Luna, the Asian black bear occupies the 1960's era Bear Grotto. Renovations were made earlier this decade to combine the two enclosures into one and add plants and substrate. Further renovations are planned in the future. 2009

Hopefully those renovations include a bulldozer.:) Seriously though, is Luna an elderly bear?

No details yet as to what the renovations will be, it's not even a formal plan yet just something that is on people's minds.

I'm not sure how old Luna is, but she does kind of act elderly.

You mean this was originally TWO bear enclosures?!!!!!

Yeah, this was in the days before this zoo was accredited. The left side had two grizzlies, and the right had two American black bears.

I'm still trying to find the space for two enclosures. Well, with only something like 12 acres they still have a fairly impressive collection. And at least they're renovating. What zoo, especially older zoo, doesn't need renovation somewhere? Certainly my home zoo L.A., and even San Diego.

This photo doesn't show it very well because you are basically looking at the grotto from the side. It's a little deeper than it looks from this photo. The piece of concrete in between the two pieces of concrete with holes in them, is the one that used to be the dividing wall. Plans are in place to renovate this grotto in the relative near future.

Did this exhibit ever get renovated or is there still a bear stuck in here?

Renovations are ongoing for the zoo's sloth bear. They have regraded the exhibit making the moat useable space, effectively tripling the available space for the animal. An added bonus is there will be face-to-face viewing in a covered glass-viewing area.

That sounds good. The Boise Zoo sounds like it is on a roll to being a good 21st century zoo.
