yes, and also New Zealand (but not this subspecies). I'd always imagined the ones in overseas zoos are of Australian origin though, rather than from New Guinea.
See and in the US it always seems that if we have a species that exists in both Australia and New Guinea, New Guinea is almost always the origin of it. That's just my perception though, don't know how much truth there is to it.
I think in general that must be true (thinking of frilled lizards and so on). I think I probably just automatically assume the US lapwings are from Australia simply because that's just where I'm used to seeing them.
