They had some success with their Asian elephants. Their current bull, Dhalip, sired four calves with cow Seetna. The first being Rocky who was born at the Metro zoo's previous facility (in Crandon park) 1977. The male calf unfortunately survived a total of 17 days. In 1981 Seetna gave birth to a male calf again; later named Spike. He currently lives at the Calgary zoo, and is scheduled for a transfer to the lower forty-eight soon. In 1985 a female calf, named pearl was born... unfortunately she didn't survive more than two days. While the zoo was repairing from the tragedy that was Hurricane Andrew the Asian elephants were housed at the two tails ranch. Seetna went into labor there in 1996. Due to complications related to the birth the mother was euthanized.
Nothing notable for Africans except the calf born in Cleveland to African cow 'Tribby' who conceived in Miami with their bull Tribby. A heart (perhaps a gastro-intestinal as well?) defect killed the female calf 24 hours later.
Is Miami now the only zoo in the U.S. that maintains separate exhibit complexes for both Asian and African elephants?
The San Diego Wild Animal Park ceased doing this when they moved all of the Asian elephants to the zoo and San Francisco Zoo used to, but no longer has any elephants.
