Gerenuk

Interesting that, according to the distribution map, the gerenuk's home range conforms exactly to international national borders!

There's a gerenuk-excluding forcefield all along the borders of Djibouti, the Sudans, Uganda and Tanzania. Well-known fact.

They're allowed to go to Eritrea, of course, but they choose not to, for reasons they have never adequately explained.

This may enter the realms of 'too much information' but, in 1989, I was driving from Arusha, in northern Tanzania, up to Kenya. Stopping to answer nature's call, I disappeared into the bush, with my shovel and a roll of loo paper, and startled a small group of gerenuk, who quickly dispersed. It is the only occasion on which I have seen them in the wild. Given that I was at least 20 miles from the Kenyan border, I now realise how lucky I was.....
